Month: April 2008

Thanks for all the gardening comments. It was such a miserable day I had to go out between showers to find something cheerful. This is what I found. Check the pictures- flowers on the Cherry Laurel with a lovely scent, this bush has gone skywards and will have to be trimmed. A peach and a pink daffodil. Sunlight filtering through the woodland walk and some meteorites!!! The fox isn’t at home anymore I must have frightened him off or may be my 3 fearsome creatures did!

Sunday 6th April

I planted daffodil Winston Churchill in the autumn.  I know that they were late flowering but I can’t believe that they have not flowered yet?  I picked some today. Ones that are barely in bud.  Hopefully they will flower next week.  Some of the stems have 3 flowers per head. Bonus.

I can’t keep up with the weeds.  I got my husband to mix some weedkiller for me so that I would do the spraying myself.  I usually garden organically.  I couldn’t bring myself to spray.  Whatever about green fingers I definately have a green conscience.  I was in a cold sweat for the night at the thoughts that I almost sprayed a few docks among the raspberries.  Instead I did it by hand.  THis took a total of 8 hours for one row.  I haven’t even started the second row yet.  I mulched very thickly to prevent me returning to weed too quickly.

The tulips are starting to colour up now.  Next year I must buy some more varieties.  My wedding bouqet consisted of one bunch of yellow tulips.  I have always loved them in a vase but never seem to go for them at bulb buying time.

The temperatures are going up and things are coming alive! I have loads of moss in the lawn but lets look at the flowers instead! This is my first Pulsatilla, (thanks to Woodies bargain shelf!) The Sanquinaria came from Frogswell Nursery in Straide which is a beautiful woodland garden to visit.

I grew this either from a piece someone gave me or something I bought off the bargain stand. Does anyone know what it is?

I would like to know what this is!

Hello all gardening enthusiasts.  As you can see from my photos my favourites are perenials I can’t have enough of them in the garden. I always seem to be searching for something. I hate if anything dies in the garden. I have loads of great gardening buddies in my area. Around here there are 5 garden clubs  and  that means there are lots of gardening activities going on.  Nice to chat to you all.

I’ve always thought my garden is the perfect place for a hedgehog, plenty of hedges and loads of slugs, what more could a hedgehog want.

Well low and behold, coming come late last night the headlights lit up a little spikey roundy thing scurrying for cover. I’m thrilled, every garden should have a hedgehog. I just dont understand why I also have a big slug population as well. I wish Spikey would have a few dinner parties or something:)

what can i say about my garden.Bought my house a year ago and spent all our time

and money on the inside. Its only now Im getting the chance to go at it.Ive started by building a small shed .The garden is not big but i want to do is keep it low maintance because as much as i love being out in it my job as a bar manager keeps me away from it for long periods.

I planted daffodil Winston churchill in the autumn last year and they have not flowered yet.  They are in bud this week so next week they’ll probably bloom.

I bought a wisteria plant weeks ago.  This will be the third one.  This one is about 6 feet tall with about 3 growing branches.  I have always loved wisteria and I would love it to grow on the walls of the house.  I’m going to try this one last time.  There is a fabulous wisteria growing up the walls of a house in Montpelier and I love to drive up to see it.

I haven’t planted my spuds yet!  All the seeds are sprouting well in the greenhouse and the house.  The shelves in the greenhouse are groaning.

All the weeding hasn’t been done yet.

So since i was last here, that is 10 days ago, it has snowed for three days in a row how lucky are we as we are beside the sea and that never happens ……… And the garden for a few hours a day looked great, then after the snow, I got lazy and hope to get back into my garden by the weekend, weather and kids permitting…..

Yesterday was glorious, the clothes on the line were actual dry by the end of day. I spent my gardening time tidying up all the old plant pots from yesteryears. You know the ones still full of compost that may or maynot have been something special at some stage but now growing a profusion of various mosses and weeds.

I presume I can use the compost again, so I was emptying them into a bucket when suddenly the place was swarming with red ants. There must have been a nest in one of the pots. Luckily I was wearing my gloves ’cause these guys are deadly stingers or biters I dont know which I just know that they hurt like hell. So I did my little panic dance threw off the gloves and walked away to live another day!

But I’ll be back armed and dangerous , ants beware, this is war!

..Agood day…warm ..and that cold weather we have had lately..is changing..Its the buds!! …Ilove Spring ..tonight when Ireturned …the garden welcomed me home! daffodills waving … and the trees promise foliage…there is my neighbours Cherry tree ..which blossoms for my birthday..Sophie .flops on the lawn .we played ring a rosy this morning as she tests out her tiny feet ..Eloise,her twin ..will try it on the morrow ..glad the lawn is soft for new tiny people exploring…mmmm there is a black cat in the back ..pondering…mmm should do the Lotto!!

God i am just mad to get out of this office and do some gardening!! ……. mmmmmmm FRESH AIR, you can’t beat it!! well, our house in on quite a large site, lots and lots of lawn, this year i hope to put in another bit at the back of the house, fence it off and have a DOG FREE Zone for my 1 year old!! ….. I have a veg patch which i love rooting in, shrub beds at the front of the house and a WIP woodland garden….. lots to do and look after, I look forward to putting up pictures to share with you after the weekend*

Found these photos of the front wall and house on the camera. I took them in Feb ’08 and everything looks pretty bare.

Over the weeknd i managed to plant some perennials(which i had divided last autumn) and summer flowering bulbs behind the wing walls to the entrance.

Left some spaces for shrubs and i hope to get some over the may bank holiday weekend, give it some backbone.

If you look at my photos you will see a very small pond and a very dead hedgehog.  I had an enormous, spiky, ever growing plant on this site and decided to get rid of it and put a decorative water feature in its place.  Really successful for about a year and then one day a hedgehog had wandered in and been unable to get out, and sadly drowned.  So I put in a large, angled rock so that if another fell in, it would be able to climb out.  A few days later there was another drowned hedgehog……so out came the water feature and in went several bags of compost and it is now a very small flower bed.  Really sad little story.

So no rain full sun, all day so i left the garden alone, I know its a prefect day, letting it have a day to dry a bit will do it some good and my back………….So went to the beach instead with the boys what a lovely day….Why do people get other people to do there garden where do you find the pride for it knowing you turning every sod and know every inch of it I think brings a great satisfaction……….Anyway everyone to there own eh!!! Anyway back to the garden for the whole day….Oh and my little jack russell decided that one of my cherry blossoms would give him great teething relief  aaaaaaaaaa………….

AAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I have to say I never have had a problem with cats I didnt hate them or like them, But since we have moved into our new home, the two toms a few doors up are spraying at my doors……….And the smell is unreal, when my little dog is out during the they dont come around back….But when Ben comes in at night they are out there they know when he goes to bed and they spray for the night aaaaaaaaaaaaa…And what is that going to do my plants?????????And i have went out today a spent alot on alot of fine plants?????????? So has anyone got any ideas??????????

Hi all, welcome to my garden!

I must say, I am particularly proud of my garden.  Up to September 2004 I had no gardening experience so when we bought our house (a new build) I had a project on my hands because the garden was a bit of a wasteland after the building work.  It was full of thistles, nettles and frogs!  I worked on in fairly regularly over the couple of years and it was really only Summer 2007 when it came to fruition as you can see from the photograph I have uploaded.  I am particularly proud of the pergola (which I built myself with a few friends, getting the idea from a book by Gay Search) and the raised beds (which have glass bricks inset into them with candles behind them, night time photo to follow).  I have had no professionals in my garden whatsoever, I did all of the work myself and with friends for the heavier jobs!

On the pergola uprights there is a variegated Ivy in the corner, a Clematis Montana on each of the two middle uprights and a Wisteria on each of the two outside uprights.

The photos uploaded so far are all from 2007, beginning in January in the wet weather when I started working on the raised beds, and ending in June when everything was in bloom!  I can’t wait to see how things work out this year…

Check out the night shot of the raised beds with the light filled glass bricks!

Not bad for a beginner eh?

Comments welcome…

I can’t understand it, they were yellow last year!

Not that I’m complaining just curious, is it something in the soil do you think ?

Ghostly Daffodils

Ghostly Daffodils

the preparations for Bloom are all around us ….and the designers flutter ….blossoms rare and ripe ….the foliage in my garden is now rich with greenery …oh the days of hot sunshine and dreams …upon us …Ilove the new edition landed on my doormat ,,that red rose …the colour of the plants ..that divine garden and those recipies..plans for dinner …this edition gets better and better ..Congratulations …..now Ill plan that neglected corner by the rockery…and watch the roses blossom

A day of April showers …and sunshine ….and waking to find ..my amazing neighbour had mowed the lawn! …sweet man …so there it is rich, trimmed and green from the watering and tender care ….Im so lucky..so off again to work knowing the house looks well and the dragon ..in the back …is in need of attention too…would love to post a photo of his ugly face …but dont want to "upset the members"…perhaps one of the roses?? mmm will see what I can do !

I took some photos in the garden the other day and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of colour that is out there already.

The wallflower is a great success. I rescued it last year as a skinny bedraggled stalk from the bargain basket, you know the poor plants past their sell by date but really only need a little love and affection. Well my walflower is giving back a hundred fold with a profusion of flowers and the sweetest fragance.

The flame tree is flaming and sprouting saplings, which I have been trying to dig up and grow in pots but they just keep dying on me.If anybody has any tips I’d be grateful, I dont want to kill anymore but I do want to have them to transplant later on.

For some reason I can’t upload pictures here, but you can see them in my Photos

So good to sit in the garden ,this evening..the frost chilled air replaced by a warm breeze..and sunshine..remember sunshine …..if only I could see Cherry blossoms ..is it  me or are they late?..but time to observe the budding plants andlisten to some special music ….and dream of days to come…mmmmIlove  the Spring..can Summer be far behind ??

So I finally got round to giving my lawns a bit of attention this week.  After the first cut of the season the week prior, I applied a container of Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer, a wonder product I discovered a couple of years ago.  Once again it hasn’t disappointed, it’s only a week since I applied it and already the lawn is growing at a faster rate, looking greener and the weeds are starting to blacken.  The results last year were fantastic, luscious green grass with no weeds whatsoever in a very short time.  It’s a bit early to tell if it’s going to be as good this year but I have no reason to think it will be any different.

I highly recommend this product if anyone is looking for something to give their lawn a bit of a lift!

I will report back soon with more updates!
