Month: April 2008

Hi there,

The site of the garden is very open, liable to frost until about 12th July, and very very windy.

We have a greenhouse, a vegetable garden (which i am not allowed near) and the flower garden which I am responsible ofr – LOL.  There are two dogs – which help with the gardening – but can be a hindrance – i.e. burying bones, or in one instance – i had just planted out a new Sea Holly and after a while I had to lift it because it just died – no apparent cause until i lifted it and underneath it was a slice of bread – one of the dogs had buried and the roots had no where to go!

I will be starting a journal soon and will keep you posted,

Planted out around 20 Nasturtiums grown from seed, hope all the frost is gone, they were getting too big to keep in pots and I didnt feel like planting them on.

Also planted out 40 Cornflower Delbata, had some success with other annual cornflowers planted in situ last year, these are a perennial variety (purple). So fingers crossed.

hi my garden is on a half acre. it is very exposed and windy but has fabulous views over the Slaney estuary.I enjoy growing plants from cuttings and seeds especially exotic plants.

Hi everyone when i bough my house and garden about 4 years ago the garden was full of rubbish and had not been looked after for many years but you could see from the mature trees and plants that at some point it was nicely done so I started to clean it out and make it safe for the kids the near half first the beds were there you just could not see them and the grass was more nettles than grass so I cut it all down and cleaned it out . The ex summer bed as i call it looks nice in summer with bedding plants and bare the rest of the year so planing to plant it up with mix of ever green low ground cover and lots of perennials flowers hopefully to flower from spring to autumn so what plants will be a question for Gerry as I’m not much of a gardener lots of reading to do. The bulb bed started last October with bulbs to flower in January and i plant more every month I hope that after a year of doing this it will always have some flowers in boom. Then came the back half it had never been done and was used as a dump it took 2 years to clean it out but worth every minute the ash tree is big enough for swings and last month i started the tree house but in summer when the leafs are out it puts the whole back area in shade so i planted the very back with different ferns and rhododendrons this seems to work well. If anybody has any ideas or advice it would be very much appreciated Andrew

Last monday I spent the entire day weeding.  Oh! my back was broken and I felt the pain for days.  At the end of the day I was very proud of the amount of work that I got done.  Today was the first day I got to work in the garden since then and I am disgusted with the very small amount of weeding I did when compared with the pain endured and the time required.  And then I look around and the weeds are growing like mad.  I haven’t even started on my favourite flower border.

Anyway today I planted some seedlings – lupins and sweet peas – I took no chances and sprinkled some slug pellets.  I usually garden organically but I saw the weather forecast and I know the slugs will be out in force.

The chickens found a way out of the run and of course they found the newly sown carrots and peas.  I’ll have to sow them again. A third time.  I found the gap they made in the fence and I’ve tied it all up.

On a good note the greenhouse is heaving with seedlings and trays ready to sprout.  Even though my brother is an electrician I still don’t have any power down in the greenhouse so I have to put the more tender seeds in the house to germinate. My husband has been claiming that he is opressed.

There were daisies on the lawn ,as I headed to work..yesterday..and weeds pushing through…Yes it was a good day for repair and action…thinking of getting out the sunlounger!Coming home as hailstones beat furiously against the windshield..and thunder and lightening shook the car…there amid the large hailstones on the lawn..the daisies had vanished..weeds remain …but my sweet neighbour ..was working hard while I was away…and all around the Cherry blossoms .awaken gloriously….mm…wonder how good he is with weedkiller!

Not on school pick up tpday so spent time in the garden. At last it looks like things are happening – all of a sudden. Good to see.  Can’t wait for Montana to open –  Was not happy to see my smoke bush – the leaves are just starting to come out but someone has broken lumps off it. Ah well.  They joy of kids.!!
