Month: December 2010

Hi all! Have stuck up my best garden photos for this year – no broadband here so it’s taken me the past 3 hours to put up 36 pics – arragh! No gardening in a while so am glad I did as much clearing out and cleaning up beds as I did before the cold weather. The whole privet hedge has turned black, which looks pretty cool. The wine running out so will finish up I suppose!

had fun today making a greenhouse out of a old medal swing set & 6ml plastic also used pvc pipes to roll the sites & garden staples. it look great. had so much fun!!

Have added some more photos of the plants which are now still blooming –

Spend the best part of the day Saturday extending the Flower Bed at the back of the garden – Extended the boarders also- Carnations which were grown from seeds 2010

are all now replanted in the front and back garden-

Today Sunday I am planning to trim back the conifer trees at the back of the house –

Garden is looking so miserable after the snow cleared – Now looking at to see

if any damage done – The Zantedeschia aet Snowwhite leaves very droopy – Here’s hoping the plant is not frost or snow damaged –

Very dissappointed that a lot of my shrubs are frost bitten. One small bush in particular has turned brown. Do bushes and shrubs bounce back?

Thought it about time i updated my diary. Received my order from Glendoick about a week before the big freeze took hold so fingers crossed they will be okay. All are hardy but i would have preferred if they had more time to settle in. Anyway, i’ve added 6 more to my collection, Rhodos Pronum, Wardii, Mallotum, Fulgens, Roxieanum var Oreonastes and an Azalea Quinquefolium. All of which are species. All my existing Rhodos are doing well, those that were damaged early on in the year are recovering well .R. Lady Alice Fitzwilliams leaves have been damaged by drips from an overhanging Cotoneaster which i have since cut back, so hopefully that will solve that problem. At this time of year , it is nice to be thinking ahead to next spring and the treats ahead and with some luck Rhodos flowering for the first time.

wel that postman was right about weather again

Good morning Jacinta.   Thank you for the Candlelight Classics cd – received it yesterday.  Had it playing while I did our Christmas tree.   SNOW SNOW here this morning.  Started snowing round 6 o’clock last night.  Such a nuisance really!  Supposed to get worse as the day goes on!

almost snowed in again roads that bad

Many apologies for not loggin on earlier and keeping up to date with everybodies journals. Since my last journal life has just become crazy, time in short supply and never getting to do at lot of things I took pleasure in doing. I have become something I hated in people, a person rushing from A-b, never having time to admire what what going on around them and enjoy their surroundings.

I am busy at work, thank God, and have returned to college as well. between that and family I have just lost the run of myself. I look out at the garden and know i can-t get out to it. Before this I took out the laptop to catch up with what was going on with the gardeners on the site,  now it is to complete my work for college. However this is about to change. I am going to make time for me and my garden and all the things that I enjoy.

I think it is time to make time for the things that are important and enjoyable, and that to me is being out in the garden.

Plants not looking to healthy – Looks like the snow and frost has manage to get to them –

While many parts of the country were free of snow, here in Carlow we had it until Thursday morning and  has gone for the moment, very cold and frosty however and too cold to do any gardening. There is the danger now that plants will suffer.

A Christmas Cake

Ingredients:

* 2 cups flour
* 1 stick butter
* 1 cup of water
* 1 tsp baking soda
* 1 cup of sugar
* 1 tsp salt
* 1 cup of brown sugar
* Lemon juice
* 4 large eggs
* Nuts
* 1 bottle Brandy
* 2 cups of dried fruit

Sample the brandy to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the
brandy again. To be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level
cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of
butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar. Beat again.
At this point it’s best to make sure the brandy is still OK. Try
another cup… Just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 eggs
and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

Pick the frigging fruit up off floor. Mix on the turner. If the fried
druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose with a
drewscriver. Sample the brandy to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift
two cups of salt. Or something. Check the brandy. Now shift the lemon
juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or
some fink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin
360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don’t forget to beat off the
turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. Finish the brandy
and wipe counter with the cat.

Bingle Jells!

i saw some journals about this plant earlier in year . thought u might be interested in this radio program . www.abc.net.au/rn/allinthemind/stories

I’m heading up north later on today — I originally planned to go on Thurs –but my sister suggested I come sooner in case either of the airports was out of action. So I just want to wish everybody a very happy Christmas and safe travelling in these awful conditions.Talk to you all again next week hopefully.

I will believe what Brian Cowen says more than I will believe anyone talking about gloabal warming or climate change.

 But doesn’t everywhere look magical just now.

Today I tried to clear the snow away from the path outside our house and shake snow off evergreeen trees.

 Recently I see that snowdrops have appeared.  A few days ago I tried to find signs of new life in my  garden and noted camellia, rhododendron and tree peony buds.

Life goes on!

Early in the month, I had a problem with the cold water supply. My neighbour and I share a well. There was a problem as the water freezing in the pump house. This was put right. Over the last few days there was another problem with water. No water came from my hot water tap or from the cold water supply from the attic. I bought an electric heater, yesterday, an oil  filled radiator. I had planned to put it in the attic but could not get it in as it was a bit heavy. I left it on all night in the hall with the trap door open but no luck to day. I went back to the shop where I had bought it planning to get a heater similar to what I have in the greenhouse. They took back the one I bought yesterday and gave me what I wanted and got it for about €17 less. I put it in the attic and directed it at the tank. This evening, Eureka,  as Archimedes said in his bath, the water came back again in hot and cold taps from above. So the moral of the story is if you have a problem with the freezing water in the attic, you know what to do. Also no burst pipes.

Wishing all my garden friends a happy and peaceful christmas.

It looks like  most of those coming for Christmas wont make it.!!! my grandchild and his Mum are stranded in Dublin airport waiting for a flight to Amsterdam  . spent the whole afternoon clearing the driveway and then did the neighbours, much to their delight and was rewarded with a large G and T .

We were meant to be at Tonys nephew wedding tomorrow, in Abbeyleix , but there is no way can we make it, drive is clear but we cannot get out of the Village.

It could be worse …. so all of you have a peaceful happy Christmas and hopefully your families will make it home.God bless you all

Mary

Its the silly season and the few glasses of wine just adds to it …

.

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel , "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land."

 Nearly 30 years ago, when Bertie Ahern increased welfare he said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land."

  Now Brian Cowan has stolen our shovels, taxed our asses, raised the price of Camels, and mortgaged the Promised Land
