Month: June 2015

Hi guys,

I have cordylines for Terra Nova.

Let me know if you want one.

I think I have the National Collcetion – long story đŸ™‚

I know the photo shows a young Hosta, but the question is do Hosta come true from seed. I found this plant in the ground close to H. Striptease and Great Expections. Neither of these Hostas look like this baby. So is this a new strain of the two?

What is your guys opinion?

Thanks as ever.

Because of the disaster of the previous nest, Mrs. Robin is determined to do better this time …..

First of hundreds of dahlias flowers i hope to see over the whole summer and this is the first of my Dahlias to open here the other day called Dahlia ‘Pretty Woman’ a small dahlia with black foliage and a very intense pink, I think it works very well. Meant to get a photo of it when it first flowered but weather was awful so took today while it still looks good. Lots of my dahlias are in bud and had more starting to flower this time last year but hopefully with a bit of heat and sun and they’ll all start opening here.

The forecast is saying it is Breezy…..wish they could be standing in my garden as pieces of tree come flying down and the poor Delphiniums are breaking off. I think it is one of the worst winds we have had here for a while. I came in because I was afraid vewy afwaid.

Aw, aren’t they cute!

I think this fabulous aquilegia was a Johnstown swap two years ago. It’s spreading beautifully and I love it.

I believe Hazel gave me this plant at Johnstown and said it was a Buddleia. But by the looks of the leaves, one of us has got it wrong, most probably me! Can you put me straignt, Hazel?

The men have texted to say they will be back tomorrow to finish it but to all intents and purposes it is finished. The design is based on an article in GW magazine but I used stone instead of blocks and render and larch instead of railway sleepers.

I had to take this photo through the window as the weather was so bad.

I would love some advice about how to treat the larch. I want it to go grey but also want to preserve it. Should I leave it untreated until it goes grey naturally which I have read that it does…will this shorten its life?

I now have to find the soil to fill it and plant it up!!

My peonies have been slow in flowering this year, but recently Paeonia lactiflora ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ has flowered.  I hope others will flower soon.

Tonight I looked at ‘Greatest Gardens’ on BBC1, it was a wonderful programme, ably and amusingly presented by Diarmuid Gavin and Helen Dillon. What did you think of it?

Yesterday sitting chatting on the phone whilst gazing out the front window I saw a rabbit run under a parked car.  Oh no! surely not.

This mornng as I walked out of the house there he was again but this time in one of my flower beds…..he vamoosed very quickly BUT this garden is obviously on his radar.

Fortunately at least the back garden is safe from him…..unless someone comes thru the side gate and leaves it open.

Any ideas how to discourage? legally, of course.

At 11.45 a.m. I was about to get at the garden. It was dry and calm and not cold. June has arrived but not the weather you would expect. Now the rain has arrived so it will be time for indoor operation. On Saturday, I didnt go to Bloom. There was a lot to get done in my own garden and it looks as if to day will be out of bounds for same. My sister, Joan, in Dublin told me on the phone that she was there and really disappointed. What I planted out on Saturday, will do well with the rain and show growth like what Hazel and Fran have found. Yesterday, I watched the Dublin v Galway hurling and really enjoyed it. The Dublin v Longford football was too one sided so I watched only part of it. Great day for the Dubs.

Moved one of these Begonias into the Tropical area the other day. I have been hardening it off over the last few weeks, really delighted with these. I will be doing more leaf cuttings as I want to have a constant supply of these great foliage plants.

Very happy with my decision to plant out all my hostas a couple of years ago as they were getting very cramped in the pots they were in. I did love the display they made on a spare table, and mostly planted in the same style of pots for unity. But they can only live in pots for so long before getting their freedom. I have a few more to add to fill in those gaps, but that will have to wait until the end of the week.

Anyway, here’s how they look this morning. Plenty more filling out to be done, but it is only June after all! Let’s hope the weather improves a bit.

Forecast not to be good for today. So whatever you’re getting up to, enjoy!

I was recently asked about this so here you go.
