Month: February 2011

Thank God I got a fair bit done yesterday. To day raining all the time. Nothing to do from the point of gardening. It was a day to get at things inside the house from the point of cleaning and tidying. I’m sure Geraldine would say "a day for the ducks"

Yep, World Naked Gardening Day on the 14th of May………………….if it’s warm enough here!

It pelted, pelted, all day long

A singing at its work,

‘Til everyone took up the song

Way back to back a Burke,

And every creek a banker ran

And dams filled over top.

"We’ll all be rooned" said Hanrahan,

If this rain doesn’t stop.

Not much stirring in the garden at the moment but I have no doubt I,ll see something soon. I was very shocked and annoyed with myself to find some paper bags with bulbs inside.they werw alliums and Camassias which fortunately were still hard just begining to sprout so thank goodness for that . they have been planted up in pots straight away for now.

Not a day to do anything in the garden but I am just so pleased to report that the foxgloves sown a few days ago have sprouted! Also unwrapped my Birdbath to find it is ok after being blown over in the wind on Thursday- it’s fall had been broken by a lavender bush!

And yes I have 2 new Helleborus from Lidl since yesterday!                    I’m singing in the rain!

went to the catalogs. now i have all my seed.getting ready for spring

I bought a lovely mature Helleborus in Lidl of all places the other day. It cost 10 euro, only recently I bought ones that were much smaller that cost 7 euro. It has loads of flowers and buds that should flower in the next few days. Lots of different varieties there too. Well worth the price. Now just need the rain to stop so I can plant it.

No work done in the garden over the weekend as i was down in waterford and only got home this evening. How much more rain can possibly fall?? Plenty of small streams and rivers had burst their banks on the way home and as a result lots of fields are flooded. Any thoughts of working with the soil have now gone out the window. I’m sure even walking on it now would feel like weights on my feet.

hi there i have threequarter acre garden only five years old have a lot of planting done unfortunately the rabbits are eating almost everything

i took up vegetable growing three years ago it was a totally new experience as well as providing a new challange   A polytunnell was constructed last year much of my learning curve was helped by a FETAC level 5 course and to crown it all i was part of Jim Cronins gardening course last year .It is difficult to explain the satisfaction derived from eating food provided by ones own labour knowing they are free from the many chemicals which are harmfull to both us humans and the envoirment

Yes, my fiest seedling is up : Strobilanthes atropurpurea

I think it’s safe to say that I will never get sick of gardening. I’m loving both the practical and the theory. Spring, spring, spring ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m also working on a cornor of the garden which has always just been grass. My hopes for it may be a little beyond what I am capable of but gotta try!! Hense all the flower bulbs/corms/roots planted above. Never thought I would be into flowers but I’m well aware that I’ll always surprise myself at this stage so not so surprising ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope to get some photos up later. Should have photographed before I began but too late now. Still just a work site so will be good to compare when finished anyway. All the hard work of the autumn last year is already showing in the front plots which I will also post photos of later. Shoots everywhere ๐Ÿ™‚ Need to pot up AloeVera, Lavender and xmas cactus asap. Hopefully today or tomorrow. ISPCA calling tomorrow to collect an adorable little dog that graced me with her presence over the weekend. She’s a dote but starving. I would LOVE to keep her but it’s just not possible. I so hope she finds a great home…

After a week without frost and temperatures in the teens, plenty of rain on Saturday and wind last night and early this morning there had to be growth. Snowdrops and crocuses  very prominent and some growth in the lawn the mower came out about 12.30 p.m. Now the grass has been mown 1/4 acre of it and it looks good. There is plenty to be done yet such as tackling the second half for moss.

lots of orchids in woodies tullamore for e.2 , not sure of the condition , some look ok .

Today I was out in the garden for the first time in ages.  I tidied up the ground around snowdrops and crocuses, until rain sent me in.

It was great to be out and see the new growth.

Called home today on the way home from work and mum & dad had 2 malus dark rosaleen bought for me for my birthday. I now need to find somewhere to plant them. I googled the image but did not come up with a great picture. hopefully i will get some blossom on them this year to see what they are like

Cosy Meadows’ 2011 Brochure is ready so if anyone would like an email copy then send me your details at cosymeadows@hotmail.com and I’ll email a PDF out to you.

I like to grow from seeds and buy some ready rooted  plants from garden stores and many places.

next year i like to have  save some seed from this year crop to plant next year if i getused off saving seeds from the plants i grow.

this year i have a shere off plants planted all ready .

i set up a page on facebook with the photo off what i have planted all  reday in the garden greenhouse

Last night was the AGM of our Garden Society and, as is customary, we were given a ticket on arrival which, at the end of the night, was drawn for a some small prizes.

I dont usually win anything but last night my number was second out of the tin! And I came home with a new plant! – Halimium libanotis.           I am not familiar with this plant but have googled it and see that it likes a warm sunny site! Not easy to find those conditions at present!!! But hey! summer is coming.    ๐Ÿ™‚      The plant doesn’t look like much at the moment being rather weather beaten and without flower so if you need to see a flower you will have to go to Google!

After returning from Woodies I decided to get at the moss on the lawn again. As I mentioned I mowed the lawn yesterday so there was more moss and less grass visible. I worked at it until shortly after 5 p.m. Now about half of the lawn is sprayed.

Anyone have a crevice garden?

Any tips? suggestions?

I’m "thinking" of putting one in my front garden. Thinking of hooking out the white marble stones in the gouge in the front and putting in a red sandstone crevice area.

Anyone want to buy white marble stones? I’ll have 2½ tonnes going.

Waking up from my winter sleep. Great to see buds swelling and catkins peeping out. Got a couple of small jobs done outside last weekend and that evening stretch is even getting noticeable now.  Great.

thanks for all your congrats.. my huge parsley plant in tunnell looked like it was finished after i pulled it to bits and tidied it up but its back to itself with lots of growth…Anyone know what to do with strawberry plants in tunnell that were grown in there last year and had lots of fruit…I just tidied them up  and replanted them down along one side …Should i be doing something else with them..Any one any ideas…The kids go mad for strawberries…Any info would be great

Its at times like this i wish i had a horse outside…that manure is supposed to be great…although a neighbour has a few i might go and get some…the compost heap isent looking too good i must open the bottom and have a look…thanks for that tip…
