When the rain cleared, I got at the moss on the lawn again. By to morrow there should be little or nothing left to to in this area. Some more tomato seeds were potted up. Those potted early on are doing well.

Got to work clearing a large sloped bank out in the back garden today, hard work but very satisfing. Plan on covering it with lots of Geraniums, Catmint and other lovely things that I haven’t decided on yet. Any suggestions for medium height gound cover that will work well in a cottage garden would be appreciated.

I walked around the garden last evening and realised that I can no longer put off pruning my fruit trees and bushes. I don’t know why, but pruning apples and pears is one of my least favourite jobs in the garden. So here goes………….

Going up the Trim road saw beautiful sight. two different grass patches outside gardens planted all over with snowdrops    . beautiful. walking round the garden I noticed a big change from a few days ago. witch hazel has a few flowers a big bunch of primroses and a lot of other shrubs showing good signs of growth.

hi everyone

took a walk out the front garden a couple of minutes ago, my photinia "Red Robin" is definately dead, i scraped the bark and it is brown, i am so disappointed, really loved that shrub. god knows what else has gone. It would make you wonder what will survive if we keep getting these winters of -17 degrees. i am not going to do anyting with the front until i have the new veg beds done. i have enough to do up to april at least.

hi everyone

seed sowing starting tomorrow, once the kids are at school i will be out in the tunnel to fill the trays and then after dinner i will be sowing till my arms fall off. when i have it all done i will put up pictures.

once that is done i can concentrate on the new veg plot, that is if it stops raining so that the soil can dry up and i can work on it. the hens will love that because there will be worms galore

Hi Everyone

I  have been a follower of Garden.ie for a couple of years but I didn’t join until  recently as I only started my garden in 2010. I have put up some photos showing the site from the beginning and giving some ideas of what happened throughout the year. I am new to gardening but I have to say I found the year so enjoyable and worthwhile – you all know that anyway!!

I hope to become an active member of this club from now on as you all seem so helpful and easygoing and relaxed with each other!

Look forward to talking with you all………

Attended the Askea Country Market to day, sold nothing. We had our AGM afterwards. I mentioned garden.ie. In the afternoon I continued with the spraying of moss. The lawn was somewhat yellow up to now. Where it was it is now black and I should finish it to morrow. It is a slow job using the watering can on a lawn 1/4 acre but worth it. I should finish it to morrow.

The best anecdote to this recession is gardening.

For a few euros you can buy seeds and fill your garden.

It may be escapism. But is that so very bad?

taking down to big pine trees . they are 50ft high and could fall. what could i plant in their place. that would look good all year. that would only grow to 1o ft

Are you all watching the Late Late Show. I didn’t hear Martin’s song:)

How will Jedward do in Eurovision? To be honest i think its another Dustin the turkey show.

Hi there,

We had 3 plants of boston ivy and virginia creeper which thankfully spread last summer on north facing wall. When will the buds come out ?should I give them a feed this spring ?I was a bit dissappointed last autumn as teh leaves seemed to fall quite quickly and we had bare walls by mid october. I thought hat they would have a scarlett display even in november.Mind you these have only been planted 18months ago.

Thanks

Steve

What a beautiful day today in Monaghan. It was the first day out in the garden since well before Christmas… God its as good as any tonic… Better in fact. Got loads of tidying up done, two raised beds outside the back door weeded and mulched. Hubbie felt the spring clean vibe too and swept and washed down the street. Everything looks good and its great to see the snowdrops out and daffs beginning to show…

A friend sent me this funny email…. i hope you all enjoy it too…

Marriage is sharing!!

The old man placed  an order for one hamburger, french fries and a drink.

He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the french fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.

He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of burger. the people around him were looking over and whispering.

Obviously the were thinking, that poor old couple- all they can afford is one meal between them.

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said they were just fine- they were used to sharing everything.

People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping  the drink.

Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said ‘no thank you we are used to sharing everything’

Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked ‘what is it you are waiting for’

She answered….

Had a girly day out with jacinta. We met at Jacintas, house where we both had our hairs done, so we were starting the day feeling beautiful at least. we then went out for lunchwhich was good(no interuptions). we had a great chat and most importantly a great laugh. We haven,t had a get together for a long time.we went on from there to her local aldi where bought Primulas and Irises and I couldn,t resist the bird boxes so I bought two of them. we headed to Tesco from there to get a cheap mobile  as I,ve been without one for a while and it,s not a good idea when u live outside dublin. Made our way back to Jacinta,s and had more tea and chat. Thanks for a lovely day, not so long till next one.

I was suprised when looking at last september’s  ‘Irish Garden’ that Pheasantberry got a reccommendation.  I think it’s so pretty but thought it had been deemed a weed with some garden centres not stocking it any more and thus I never put it in my garden.  What do people think is it worth giving it a try?

my garden is full of different kinds of flowers .i wish i could say i only like 1 kind of flower .but i like them all. rose, day lilies.butterfly flower.so i tend to have a mixure. but i love walking thought each day and seeing somthing different. or something blooming thtas whats great.

I have never been to visit Mount Congreve gardens although I live in Waterford.  I believe it’s open to visitors on Thursday mornings and it is fabulous to visit when the Magnolias are in flower as well as the rhododendrons and camelias.  Rather than drag my boys along or bring non interested friends I would love to visit with enthusiastic company so if anyone is coming to Waterford to visit Mount Congreve I would love to join them in the visit.  Most thursday mornings suit me as my boys are in school.

It’s good to see some colour back our garden again. The mahonia is later to bloom this year, but worth waiting for with its beautiful scent. The snowdrops are doing well too. Winter heathers give a lovely splash of colour with pink and white ones. The whichhazel is interesting with its unusual flowers. This all gives great winter cheer. Still tidying up some leaves and herbacious long gone foliage, always plenty to do even in the winter.

Just out in the garden having a look around, noticed the my hens have pecked the flowers off from some primroses that I have in pots ready to plant. Hope they don’t get a taste for the rest of my plants.

For anyone interested,  Nationwide are doing a piece on snowdrops  this evening  in fact in about 10 mins
