I have 2 red robin trees in containers, is it ok to trim the trees to keep them in shape. when is the best time to do this?

Yes, they can be clipped as much as you like, and this can be done as soon as the flush of new leaves has pushed out. The clippling will bring on another crop. They might need clipping again in late summer or early autumn.
