Beech hedge slow to mature

My beech hedge planted 3 years ago is very slow to mature and a few have not survived, the soil is poor and an adjacent hedge planted at same time is thriving. Whats best fertiiser to use and shoudl I mulch and fill in gaps with a different species

Beech is often slow to start as it roots in first, but can be slow on poor soil, so feed with Tree and Shrub fertilizer or general fertilizer, 30 grams per metre of row on each side, and keep all weeds down.

Fill in the gaps with beech in winter.
