Beech trees

Martin O\’Sullivan asked 14 years ago

Hi Gerry, I have 3 or 4 beech trees that were attacked by rabbits but luckily enough i saved them.17My question is:The Beech trees are only about a foot high. Last year I cut the tops to generate growth but think I may have done more good than bad. This year they are showing signs they are still alive. I heard that if you cut the tops they stop growing. Is this true as I cut the tops of mine when they were only a foot high? Martin.

Cutting the tops off young trees is not advisable … there is no reason for doing it. Protect from rabbits with wire netting or plastic. All young trees need is freedom from weeds for 1 metre diameter.
