black elder and cat attack

Moira Skinner asked 15 years ago

yesterday I put in a black elder, healthy with flowers about to bloom, this morning it was flattened and broken, the stem is covered with cat hair as if a cat rubbed and rubbed itself on it. Is there something that attracts cats in it and also will it come back if I leave it in and protect it?

There is no particular attraction, other than that it was new and a useful scratching place. Cats often rip the back of elder and other trees to clean their claws, but these would generally be bigger trees.
