caterpillars

tocoeoli asked 14 years ago

Every year my brocolli is invaded by caterpillars, I have dealt with this previously by picking them off or using a spray to kill them. However, i would prefer to try to keep them at bay using a net (if possible?), what mesh size would the net need to be in order to be effective?

It can be difficult to completely exclude caterpillars from broccoli, but it can be done by using horticultural fleece. In general netting mesh is not fine enough … it can keep out the cabbage white butterfly but the much small cabbage moth can get through.

The fleece needs to be secured on hoops and pinned to the soil to prevent access. You can cover when about half-grown.
