Dying hedge

Liz Tegg asked 16 years ago

Gerry, we have an evergreen hedge with small leaves. Currently two thirds of the hedge is looking very bare and the leaves that remain on it have brown spots on. In the centre of these brown spots are white spots. The entitre spots are 5mm across and there are as many as 20 on each 2cm leaf? Advice please on how to save the hedge!!!!

It is difficult to tell what this is without knowing either the hedge or seeing the damage, but if it is box hedging it could be box blight and if if it hebe, it could be hebe leaf spot, and there are other possibilities.

With any of these hedge diseases, there is no control, but to let the hedge take its  chances. Sprays are not very effective and you cannot be spraying every few weeks.
