garden allergen

Yvonne asked 9 years ago
I have had an allergic reaction to something in the garden of a house let out, on/off for several years. Severe swelling of eye/lips, rash on neck/face, I have been admitted to hospital for treatment due to severity. I would like to get to the bottom of the issue as we are now moving into this house. There is hogweed there but I dont think it is that as have had exposure to that all my life. It is very overgrown at present due to tenancy. Any advice would be appreciated or if you know of someone that may help.

There are lots of substances, not just plants, that can cause allergic reactions, including tomatoes, parsnips and lots of others. Most of these are members of the carrot family (including hogweed), the daisy family and the spurge family, although by no means exclusively.

If you have a very severe reaction, it can be dangerous and you should ask about carrying emergency treatment, as allergies can build in severity. Clearing out all the plants is one possibility but you could just as easily bring in a plant allergenic to you.

But honestly this is more of a medical problem than a horticultural one.
