My multi-stemmed birch is being atacked by greeny yellow caterpillars with black stripes about 2 cm long that are eating the leaves. Should I do anything about it such as spraying with a pesticide or just leave them to their meal?
My clematis has wilt can it be saved or do i discard it and start again?
I have a skimmea japonica repotted in a large pot recently, but now i have noticed the top surface of the leaves seem to be ate away by something they are left with white patches as if the green surface was eaten away. i cant see any insects on it anywhere.
My two year old variegated poplar has been totally destroyed this year by puss moth caterpillars.what little foliage is left is all burnt by the acid they secrete. How do I get rid of them,I'm not a fan of pesticides, and are they likely to return every year?I had planned on planting more of the same, but am now wary as it would be a waste of time and money if they are going to be destroyed every year by these caterpillars.Would appreciate any advice you would have?
About this time last year or a little later we purchased2 clematis for our garden back wall and trellis.Over the last 2 weeks or one flower began at last to appear very slowly on one of the flower plants but didnt flower fully and then slowly died. Over the last few days the leaves of the flower now up to trellis on the wall started to go brown yellow black kind of and now it looks dead, though the stem appears to have life still. What could be the cause of this as we got plenty rain etc.The clematis flower is sown at the bottomn of the walland slightly shaded by a fuscia plant which has also always struggled with its leaves yellowish but never dies. There is another fuscia fhedging plant closeby on the same wall and this is doing very well with green leaves and growing mad.Curiously another clematis flower on the same wallis also slowly starting to flower fully and looks in good health. Why would you think the first clematis flower has failed and can it be rescued as doesnt seem fully dead on the stem we hope? Also any suggestions why one fuscia plant is doing better than another at the back wall?
The leaves on the tips of each branch of my 7-8 year old ornamental cherry look as if they've been burned.
Of 5 ten year old whitebeam( i think) trees , the leaves on two have shrivelled and they have stopped growing. The other three look like they are heading the same way. Pic of spotty leaves is attached. Twigs do not seem completely dead as yet.The garden is fairly heavy clay. All 5 trees flourished up til now. Is ther anything i can do?
I have a Chamaecyparis hedge which was planted in 1930 approx. In June we noticed some of the leaves dying back on three of the trees in one corner. They are continuing to get worse and one now looks fully dead. The trees beside them are now changing colour and I am worried it is going to spread and kill the complete line of trees.Early last year we had a burst oil pipe from a tipping trailer which sprayed oil all over one of the trees, and the branches died off fairly fast. This might be the root cause of whatever the infection is.Is there a fungicide we should apply to stop the spread or should we cut out the trees which appear infected (LAST RESORT)?
do you know what insect this is, and if it is harmful to my garden, I have a few more pictures up in my album if they help.
I have some acers growing in containers. Is it recommended to use PROVADO in these.?
I recently bought a cherry tree called Kanzan. Holes have appeared in some of the leaves and other leaves have turned brown around the edges. Could this tree be diseased or is there a bug attacking it?
One of our Photinina Red Robin- X Fraseri, has two or three unusual growths at the base of the branches as they go into the soil. Look like 'barnacles' but quite big about half a tennis ball size. They are 'stuck' to the brances and when we try to pull off no luck at all. The plant itself is ok does not show any sign of growth retardation. We have several of the same shrub on our boundary and no others are affected at all.
Hi Gerry, thank you for your advice recently about watering my horse chestnut trees. it seems to have stalled the dying leaves however i was just wondering from going through the website you seem to recomend not feeding some trees and feeding others. would there be any use in feeding my horsechest nut to help them along and why would i not? also these trees are incorportated in a lawn and therefore have grass up to the base of the tree should i spray around the trees and limit the competition from the grass? someone suggested that i should root with a stake wround the trees and pour water into the holes to allow extra water down? thanks
Ten Year old cherry blossom. stopped flowering, looks dead , with only a few small leaves in summer. What can I do? Can it be saved? was a bit of root damage nearby but surely that is not the reason?
