Im wondering is it safe to plant out summer bedding or is there still a risk of frost. When will I know it is safe. I live in mid cork
I need your help please. My garden is under siege by some savage caterpillars. They are large and bright green and have done untold damage to 10 lilies and reduced them to stumps!! I squashed 5 of these rotten bugs and haven't seen any since but I am sure more will be back. I have attached a photo of a very ugly looking bug which I think might grow up to be one of these bright green caterpillars. It was an inch in length and one of 28 I found between my front and back garden, under every pot and every where I dug. Nobody can tell me what it is and I need to get rid of them as they were dangerously close to my vegetable garden.
I have 4 Physalis shrubs which were damaged by the frost. Growth has started at the base.Should I cut them down to the base now?
Can I lift and divide a papaver now?
I'm a complete beginner and I have lovely maple trees in the driveway, the only thing is I can't keep the grass clear underneath. I have bulbs planted underneath so I try to pull the grass by hand but it still looks terrible. can any one let me know how to keep this clear and neat like i'd see in every other garden around? regards fortfield
I have a Leylandii hedge that has a very unkempt look underneath, prone to nettles, and bare stumps etc. Can you recommend how I might make a viable flower border under it given the roots, shade etc?
Is there any truth that moth balls repel cats from your plants?
Has anyone ever seen a garden daisy like this?? my 'nature expert' 10 year old daughter found it on easter Sunday among normal daisies. i have it in water now... any tips in how I can preserve it better as it may be of interest to botanical experts?
I forgot to store the packets of seeds that I purchased last Spring such as pansies, petunias and cosmos in a sealed container or bag. They are still in date? I sowed them indoors nearly three weeks ago with very poor germination rates apart from the Cosmos. Cosmos is a bigger seed. I do think germination conditions were adequate. Is it worth testing these seeds using the paper towel method or are they dead?
I planted a bamboo tree about 7 years ago and it is taking over a portion of my garden. is their anyway to get to the roots so I can stop it form spreading any further!
Our potted Phormium is looking sad and brown, possibly as a result of a very hard winter. I'm sure its pot is large enough. Should I cut it right down, or prune the brown leaves (most of them are brown), or do you think it might have died?
Every year I look forward to planting up window boxes, using mostly petunia, calibrachoa and lobelia and marigold. I'd really appreciate any tips you might have to get a really nice healthy and long lasting display. I wonder what might be the best type of compost to use. I've seen the 'miracle grow' brand which is especially for containers and baskets but it's quite expensive and I have a lot of containers to fill. Spacing of plants is another query I have.I'm inclined to sometimes become over enthusiastic and put too many plants in the window box. I was also wondering about vermiculite and perlite. Would adding them to the compost help to give a better flower display, I wonder?
Just wondering if you could recommend some flowers that would be suited to potting. I am looking to fill three troughs roughly 150cm in length and am loking to display in partial shade. As much colour as possible is the aim as this is a rather glum area at the minute.
