Hi Gerry, I have two hydrangeas for about fiv years that have never flowered.I prune them, feed them and they look perfect except for being flower less. What am I doing wrong?Caroline
I have a garden that is very overgrown with shrubs of all sorts i.e. flowering shrubs and shrubs that look like they will stay green/yellow for the whole of the Winter. I wont be able to do anything with it until the first week in September (just bought the house), can I cut back the shrubs by a third when they stop flowering or do I have to wait for the leaves to fall off I'm not sure if they do fall off? Can I give them a good cutting in January because they make the garden look small, its deceiving.
I am looking for any information about the bottle bush, I have taken cuttings from a bush and hope to grow it. thanks
Hi Gerry, I have a mimosa tree its 17 years old,i am just wondering when is the best time to cut it back and the best way of doing it,lokking forward to hearing from you, thanks
I have an Escallonia which may be Slieve Donard variety, it has weeping pendulous branches with red blossoms and differs from the usual hedging variety. How should it be pruned to make it more bushy and should the 'weeping' branches be supported? How high might it grow? (presently about 3 ft.)
I have a driveway lined with approx 200 7 year-old oak trees. They are planted only 2-3 feet apart and are now between 8 and 12 ft in height. What do you suggest I do at this stage? Are they too close to mature properly and should I remove say, four of every five? Is it feasible to transplant this number of trees or is it too daunting a job? Can you give advice on pruning lower branches to facilitate the lawn-mower? Many thanks!
hi Gerry, I planted dogwoods last May this year and I'd like to ask when it is the best time to prune them to make it spectacular during winter. I need help please. Thanks and hope to hear from you. Kind regards.
Every description of Japanese Maple says "small tree". Not so, mine in Glengarriff - see picture! It is a beautiful specimen but can I prune some of the lower branches to reduce some of the width to allow the azaleas either side to have a bit more space or would I be putting it at risk? Suzie
I believe April after flowering is the best time to prune acacia dealbata. Can I prune now or is it better to wait until next year? Many thanks for your help.
I've cut down an old sycamore tree. How do I get rid of the roots? I'm afraid to pull them out in case they are too extensive and undermine the garage or garden wall
We've cleared rampantly overgrown hedging and cut away lots of ivy around this 20' tree and it seems to have responded - it's bushier with more foliage. But it is still very twiggy and scraggly looking with as many small bare branches as leaf-bearing. Should we prune, and how - we're total beginners?
HELLO AGAIN,MY CLEMATIS PLANTS ARE NOT FLOWERING THIS YEAR,THEY DID AROUND APRIL LAST YEAR.ANYTHING I CAN DO?
hi gerry, i have leylandii hedge which has grown quite tall, I would like to know how much can be cut from the top of it without killing it
I have 2 red robin trees in containers, is it ok to trim the trees to keep them in shape. when is the best time to do this?
Hi Gerry. I have a Japanese Maple that I planted out last Oct., it was in a tub. It about 5ft. tall and 4ft. wide.
The leaves are out about three weeks now. The problem is that there is now leaf growth on the tips of of quite a few of the branches, it is not dead wood, should I cut back to where there is leaf growth that would be in most cases about 5-6 inches.
Look forward to your opinion.
Noel Forde
