Books etc. indicate a certain time for pruning trees and shrubs. 'Directly after flowering', 'In early winter', and the like. What bad things happen when I deviate from it? For instance, when I prune in spring: Only less flowers next year?, or when I prune my weeping willow now in stead of in wintertime? serious risk of fungus damage, or ....? Regards ,Fons
I think I have shrubs and plants like Berberis,Rhodododendron,Pieris,Hydranga, cotoneaster,Ulex, Garrya,Romneya,Rubus and many more but what I would realy like to know is how hard can plants and shrubs be cut back as a lot of mine are overgrown and I would like to get the garden back into shape.
Battled bravely with beautiful inherited laurel hege on both sides of house, each side approx 200 ft long x 15 ft wide x 13 ft high. Need to cut it back really hard - losing many feet on sides and maybe 5 ft on top - radical! When can I do this and can I use a tractor/mechanical hedge cutter. Heresy I know, but one last effort to keep in under control!

We moved into our house 5 years ago, there are 2 large probably 60-70 foot scots pines at the bottom of our back garden, although I like the trees they are blocking a lot of the sunshine from getting into our garden(west/south facing), we would like to get the trees topped. We have contacted 3 tree surgeons all gave us conflicting advice, firstly dont top as the trees will die, secondly that you cannot top until autumn as the sap levels are too high in the trees and thirdly the trees can be topped now with no side effects, which of these is correct?
