This was planted in our heavy clay soil (which is gradually being improved with grit, farmyard manure and our own compost) in February 2004. It has been doing very well since, flowering well this year and now covering the roof of the shed. But it seems to be dying and there are no new young shoots. It is not entirely dead: when I scraped a tiny part of an area close to the base it was green not brown. I have started to but back all the dead part in the hope that it will revive but I would love to know what I have done wrong. How on earth could anyone kill a clematis montana rubens?
I have a 290lt composter, from February '08. (from V & W Recycling, Dundalk). It's half full now, with fruit, veg., eggshells, egg boxes & grass cuttings. It has a lid & a solid base. Today, when checking the hatch at the bottom, absolutely nothing has happened. I even added "accelerator" last month. It's in an open site, getting the sun. What am I doing wrong??Many thanks.Maire

Hi Gerry, I have a silverbirch tee nin my garden which is approx. 20 years old, It has had neither a bud nor leaf for the past 2 seasons. There are no signs of damage or decay on the bark. Kind regards, Denise.
Can you advise how I might treat a young oak tree that has a shiny gloss on the leaves - it looks like it has some type of disease.
hi gerry, our street has about 6 silver birch trees, all around 20-25 yrs old . no troubles until now, but this year they are infested with white and green flies, we park under these trees and there is a sticky coating and flies all over the cars every day. the trees are as high as the houses--2 stories--so no chance of spraying!!. can you advise --or will a severe frost in the winter take care of the problem if we wait it out? thanks grerry.
Gerry whats the best thing to stop rabbits from eating my trees and plants.
We have major problem with Midges. We live next to a forrest with a stream running through our garden. We are thinking of trying to introduce bats as an natural predator. How do we go about this, and what are the pit falls, to having bats if we were successful. Is there other natural predators that would be equally beneficial. thank you.
hi gerry!
mature treeslike varigated popular and mature shrubs are dying.I lose 5 or 6 each year in different parts of the gardens. Drainage is good, it must be some disease i feel ??
Hi Gerry, Our neighbour's cat cannot leave our Golden Willow alone and has scratched the bark very badly, it is quite a young tree, only in it's third year and I'm really worried that it will damage the tree. I've discussed this (gently) with the neighbour, but she swears that this scratching will only enhance the tree, not damage it. She doesn't want me to put any chemicals down as she's worried about her cat and has asked me to try vinegar, which doesn't work at all. I've also tried double sided tape and insulating tape, to no avail, I would really appreciate your help on this as the tree is much loved, but obviously I don't want to upset our neighbour either. Thanks and regards, Milly.

I have a 16 yr old maple tree. I have noticed that some of the branches are dead. The rest of the tree seems healthy. What could have caused this? . I am worried that the rest of the tree will go the same way. I would appreciate your advice. Thank you.
