Hello Gerry Thank you for your time. We have recently buit a pergola and would like to plant wisteria with intention that it will cover it in time. However we have been told that the planters are too small to have wisteria they measure 36inchs x 14.5 inchs & 18.5inchs deep and built of brick. Would you think they are too small ? The pergola has 6 sets of planters and posts, if we do have the suitable size how many plants will i need to achieve complete coverage. i have sent you a photo. If its a case wisteria would not be suitable what could you recommend instead

Hi, I am wondering if you can recommend somewhere I can get pots, rabbit guards and the usuall bits and pieces you need to help grow things at a reasonable price and decent quantities. There is a few of us starting off and hoping to keep within budget. I have tried Ebay but everything is in the UK. Regards Angela
i planted an acer platenoides 2 years ago, last year leaves grew but this year although the buds grew, they never opened. However a small shoot has grown at the foot of the tree. Should I leave it alone or replace it
We planted two silver birches, both 12 foot high and they have got progessively worse, now most of the leaves on both of them have gone very brown and autumnal looking, and very dry. I think they are dying. What is the best course of action now?Kind Regards ,Peter Clements
I lifted a mature Choisya 'Sundance' last November (to facilitate garden work) in a hurry and put it in a container in a loose soil conditioner type compost - all I had. I pruned it severely to move it, and although it hasn't died entirely, it's not doing anything either. Is there any hope of recovery?
I have 2 lilac tree's in pots that need planting out, where would be the best place to plant them, ideally i would love them to be in the front garden
Hi, there's a large camellia shrub that I'd like to remove in my garden. It's growing amongst several other shrubs and I'm afraid if I disturb the soil around the roots too much it could kill the other plants. Also, the roots have come above ground in several places and I'd like to pave the area...is my only option going in and taking out the roots as carefully as possible?
Hi Gerry. I planted 180 escallonia in October of which 40 appear to be dead or dying. There is some new growth on a few of them but not much. The leaves basically go brown, harden then die. Any ideas on this,as I thought these were hardy plants. I'm in a very windy area, and the soil is not great quality.
Hi again Gerry.
It's hard to get good advice on leylandii, as most people just say that they're an awful tree, & to get rid of them. However I don't submit to the bad press they get, & planted very young trees, along my external border, with the intention of not letting them grow any higher than 3 meters.
They were bare root when planted in November last. I am slightly concerned that the tips of the branches on quite a few of them are starting to turn an orangey brown colour.
I took a photo of the problem & uploaded it to here: https://xs226.xs.to/xs226/08150/leylandii955.jpg
to show what I mean. Feel free to use the pic for your database if you like.
I hope it's not too serious a problem, & that it can be overcome, as a lot of hard work has gone into planting these trees. Thanks again.
Hi Gerry. Last year we bought 16 fairly mature laurels in pots for a screen hedge. When I say mature, I mean they were all about 1.5 metres in height.
I understand now, that they probably would have taken to the ground better had they been younger.
They were all planted immediately, but three of them look to be on the way out despite my best efforts. The leaves are totally gone on one, & the other two are not far behind. The leaves on a fourth are gone completely yellow.
I've tried adding a small ammount of iron to the soil, but have since been told it's more likely an acid deficiency.
What can I do? Are the leafless trees dead entirely? there is a little green colour on the branches still.
Thank you.
Can i successfully move a magnolia that is about 10 yrs old? If so, how and when? Thanks. MBro
I have a small daphne 'rubra' on a sunny patio in a pot. Over the past two years it hasn't grown at all. and has hardly any leaves, although it does flower. Any tips on making it healthier? Thank you!
Hi Gerry. I planted a Wisteria with a view to it training itself up a wall, but growth seems to be very slow. How can I encourage this, and how much growth should I expect from a healthy plant?
